NICOLE STOFFMAN

Nicole has become one of Toronto’s most popular vocalists.  She is in high demand in cafés and restaurants, and at private and corporate functions, inspiring and soothing audiences with her sexy and romantic vintage jazz.

Her romantic and earthy voice is a reflection of her two loves, classic French mélodie and hot American swing.

During the past four years, Nicole Stoffman has performed as the featured vocalist with Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards, La Grande Bouche Swingtette, Swing de Paris and as the house vocalist at Le Saint Tropez, La Palette Bistro, Brassaii Bistro and Lounge, and John’s Italian Café in Toronto.

With Jeff Healey’s Jazz Wizards, Nicole performed at the Montreal, Ottawa and Halifax Jazz Festivals.  Of her performance in Ottawa, the Ottawa Citizen said, “Female vocalist Nicole Stoffman tickled the crowd with her flirty banter and dazzled them with sassy singing” (Sunday, July 28, 2002) and The Ottawa Sun called her “ a powerful songstress” (July 27, 2002).

Nicole is a native Torontonian who learned fluent French at the age of seven in the town of Aix-En-Provence, in the south of France.

You may be already familiar with "the actress Nicole Stoffman" from her role in the legendary CBC television series, Degrassi Junior High.  Nicole was nominated for a Gemini Award for her portrayal of Stephanie Kaye, school president and “A brazen beauty of the kind other girls love to hate” (MacLean’s Magazine)

Nicole studied vocal technique with Caroline Leslie, vocal coach to a cappella singing sensations, The Nylons, and herself formerly of The Canadian Opera Company.  In addition, Nicole has studied guitar with Steve Briggs of The Bebop Cowboys, a Toronto-based western swing band which was awarded the 2002 Livin’ Blues Gold Award for Blues Excellence

Her career as a singer of vintage French jazz began when she first encountered the irresistible gypsy jazz rhythm of La Grande Bouche Swingtette, a Toronto-based quintet that specialized in the style of Django Reinhardt, the famous Belgian Gypsy who generated his own style of guitar playing in 1930’s Paris.

The band was immediately struck by her authentic French vocals and a year later she recorded with them on their self-titled Debut CD produced by Jeff Healey.  This recording was nominated for the Canadian Collector’s Congress Traditional Jazz CD Award 2002.

In April of 2003, Nicole launched her own string-based acoustic jazz quartet, Nicole Stoffman’s Jazz Bohème.   In August of 2004, Nicole Stoffman’s Jazz Bohème was profiled in a short documentary on Radio-Canada Télévision and Jean-François Paradis of Radio-Canada AM interviewed Nicole The band features Nicole on vocals and rhythm guitar, Roberto Rosenman on solo guitar, Drew Jurecka on violin and Chris Bartos on string bass.  Nicole Stoffman’s Jazz Bohème have enjoyed a residency as the house band at The Drake Hotel Lounge and performed at corporate events for Air France and Copps Coliseum.  Their repertoire includes French chanson and American swing from the twenties, thirties and forties.

During the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, Nicole could be heard singing on the soundtrack to Désastre, a short film by Jay Field, winner of the Platinum Award in the Houston 2004 Short Film Festival.
